Residential Window Measurements

You’ve probably heard the advice “measure twice, cut once” as it pertains to DIY projects, and the same wisdom can be applied to purchasing new windows with a little tweak: “measure twice, order once.”

Completing DIY home improvement projects is a great way to cut costs, and in some cases, it’s a good idea—but other times it’s best to leave it to the professionals.

Measuring precisely is an absolute must, and being off even ¼ inch means the windows you order will not fit. Aside from that, professionals will spot problems with squareness being off, rot, and other issues that you might miss if you do it yourself.

DIY Measurement Guidelines

For the reasons above, it’s not a good idea to do all the measuring yourself. But there are times when knowing how to measure for windows can come in handy, such as if you want to measure yourself for estimating purposes and then have a pro verify before ordering.

Here are some guidelines to follow.

  • Measure the width in three places – top, middle, and bottom – and use the smallest measurement.
  • Measure the height in three places – left, center, and right – and use the smallest measurement.
  • Check for squareness by comparing two diagonal measurements.
  • Subtract ¼ inch from width and height.

That will give you a good idea of the window measurements, so you can estimate the cost, but always have a professional verify the measurements prior to placing your order.
